Corvallis printer presses sustainable practices with Blue Sky

Pacific Power program helps Core Communications achieve renewable energy goals

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Core Communications Inc. is at the forefront of the shift to using more sustainable printing methods.

One of the many ways Core Communications, which operates Cascade Printing, works toward its ambitious environmental goals is through participation in Pacific Power’s Blue Sky program. The program enables customers to purchase and help bring more renewable energy into the region. Energy generated from wind, biomass, solar and geothermal resources help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“In printing, there are many ways to offset your environmental impact,” said Lou Butera, president of Core Communications. “The choices made when selecting paper, coatings, ink and chemicals all are opportunities for printers to positively affect the environment. Another important element is the power we use to run the presses.”

Core Communications has two facilities in central Corvallis. Together, the locations are buying 154 blocks each month – 15,424 kilowatt-hours – of Blue Sky Block renewable energy, which represents 75 percent of their average monthly usage. During a 12-month period, the combined environmental benefit at the two locations is equivalent to planting 36,354 trees or not driving 396,551 miles. This eliminates 185 tons of CO2.

Core Communications, which includes an Internet development division, has been active in the sustainability field. The company is part of the Oregon Natural Step Network and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council for its participation in the Smart Wood program. Smart Wood is accredited by the Rainforest Alliance that assures the wood and fiber resource products being used come from responsibly managed forests or from recyclable material.

“Cascade Printing has been in business 61 years,” said Butera, who bought the operation in late 2006. “We’re proud to be the first sustainable printing operation in the Northwest, and we’re still the only one south of Portland. It’s great to see a growing trend for major companies to put a sustainability commitment into their bidding process for printing jobs.”

The company is participating in a program for Pacific Power customers who wish to buy more than 101 blocks per month. Pacific Power’s Blue Sky Quantity Savings program allows large business customers, provided they purchase at least 101 blocks of Blue Sky per month during a 12-month period – 121.2 megawatt-hours – to buy renewable energy for less. The price under this option can range from $0.71 to $1.94 per block depending on how many blocks are purchased. Buying one 100-kilowatt-hour increment of Blue Sky Block costs only $1.95 per month.

Oregon Pacific Power residential and small nonresidential customers also can choose Blue Sky Usage, which allows customers to buy their monthly equivalent energy usage from renewable resources, or Blue Sky Habitat, through which customers buy renewable energy and make a donation to The Nature Conservancy of Oregon to preserve native fish habitat.

Enrollment in Blue Sky is optional, and customers can change or increase their level of participation or withdraw at any time. For more information or to sign up for Blue Sky, go to www.pacificpower.net/bluesky or call 800-769-3717.
